The UK District Energy Association Founder Member: Enviroenergy Limited
Enviroenergy Limited is a company wholly owned by Nottingham City Council, and established in 1972. They are primarily tasked with operating the Nottingham District Energy Network, which is one of the largest in the UK. As an Energy-from-Waste scheme they utilise steam produced through the incineration of 160,000 tonnes of domestic and commercial waste collected in Nottingham and three surrounding districts at the Eastcroft incinerator on the outskirts of Nottingham City Centre.
At their premises on London Road they convert this high-pressure steam into electricity and hot water. Electricity is supplied to a dozen major commercial customers via a dedicated private wire network of underground cables with any excess spilled to the National Grid.
Hot water is distributed to both commercial and domestic customers through a 68km network of pre-insulated mains that covers much of the city centre and surrounding suburbs.
Enviroenergy’s energy customers include the National Ice Centre, the Broadmarsh and Victoria shopping centres, two large hotels, BioCity, the HM Revenue & Customs offices, Capital One’s European headquarters and Nottingham Trent University, as well as over 4,900 domestic consumers.
Typically, 60,000 MWh of electricity and 150,000 MWh of heat are sold annually, generating savings of approximately 27,000 tonnes of CO² emissions that would otherwise be produced by alternative use of gas.
Nottingham has an ambition as a City to reduce carbon emissions by 26% and generate 20% of its energy requirements from renewable and low carbon sources by 2020. The Nottingham City Council energy strategy, published in June 2010, described the technology required to meet these challenges and highlighted the need to expand existing district heating capacity in Nottingham by 73% to achieve these goals.
Furthermore, Enviroenergy operate a national heat metering and billing business. They supply other scheme operators, including housing associations and Local Authorities, with their market-leading ‘EE Monitor’ advanced pre-payment system, billing and debt recovery services, customer support services and utility metering and remote monitoring packages.
