The UK District Energy Association Associate Member:

Grant Thornton UK LLP

Grant Thornton is one of the world's leading organisations of independent assurance, tax and advisory firms. We help dynamic organisations unlock their potential for growth by providing meaningful, actionable advice through a broad range of services. Proactive teams, led by approachable partners in these firms, use insights, experience and instinct to solve complex issues for privately owned, publicly listed and public sector clients. Over 38,500 Grant Thornton people, in over 120 countries, are focused on making a difference to clients, colleagues and the communities in which we live and work.

In the UK we are a large organisation (turnover of £521 million, led by more than 185 partners and employs more than 4,500 staff across 25 offices across the UK). Our work in the decentralised energy sector is delivered by our specialists in the Energy & Environment (E&E) team.

The E&E team have considerable experience and expertise in providing advice for decentralised energy, the development and operation of heat / energy networks, as well as solar PV, energy from waste and wider power schemes stretching back over the last 15 years. We work with both the public and private sector, which has given us 360-degree sector insight and market understanding. In particular, we know what criteria decision makers are working to, what barriers district heating projects may encounter and have strong contacts in this sector.

We have extensive experience of developing commercial models and financing solutions to deliver projects. This has been developed through our recent experience of delivering in excess of 10 Local Authority detailed feasibility studies and business case (under the BEIS Heat Network Delivery Unit programme). We are also supporting schemes as they move through the commercialisation and procurement process.

Grant Thornton has experience of the HNIP pilot round through a successful bid for funding so has a full appreciation of the application process, what makes bids attractive to HNIP and likely clarifications they would raise. We are working with BEIS to ensure that the next application process is streamlined, and has a good chance of success.

As a major accountancy and consultancy firm, Grant Thornton has access to a broad range of skills beyond our specialist decentralised energy offering, including accounting, tax, fund-raising, local government advisory, wider infrastructure procurement advisory, Valuations, M&A, restructuring and arbitration. This integrated delivery ability is a key value add of the Grant Thornton service.
