Debate continues for Dundee district heating scheme

The consultation on plans to install a district heating system in the dockside area of Dundee are continuing. The scheme will use a biomass as its main source of heat, but concerns have been expressed by local people.

The boiler will require a 100m chimney to be constructed and will burn mostly imported biomass material to produce electricity, according to the Dundee Courier. The installation will be handled by Forth Energy, a joint venture between Scottish and Southern Energy and Forth Ports.

The company was recently forced to cancel plans for a similar installation in Leith.

The Forth Energy plan is one of several others submitted to a consultation on TAYplan, the strategic development plan that will guide major developments in Tayside and north Fife. The Scottish Government has asked for the plan to be examined and consideration given to the issues raised.

The company claims that its plans will create a district heating network that would be one of the largest in the UK.
