Stockport Homes turn to Biomass District Heating

Social housing provider Stockport Homes has upgraded a major district heating system from a gas fired boiler to a biomass boiler.
The system provides heat and hot water to 487 flats in Heaton Norris and as well as increased efficiency of the system, the housing provider will also be enjoying a 75% reduction in carbon emissions totalling around 1,400 tonnes each year.
The district heating gas boilers were 34 years old and highly inefficient compared with today’s technology. As well as replacing these, the housing company has installed solar thermal and other energy efficient upgrades such as better individual heating controls.
The project attracted funding from British Gas through the CESP programme that totalled around £750K, which was topped up by European funding through the ERDF programme of a further £617K.
Further schemes are planned for Stockport Homes’ district heating sites over the course of 2012.
